2009 European Year of Creativity and Innovation

On March 31st the European Commission proposed 2009 to become European Year of Creativity and Innovation:

"Europe needs to boost its capacity for creativity and innovation for both social and economic reasons. That is why the Commission has adopted a proposal to declare 2009 the European Year of Creativity and Innovation"

On 27th of September the European Parlament proclaimed declared the 2009: European Year of Creativity and Innovation.

This is a major initiative involving Member States, EU institutions and a wide range of stakeholders. The aim is to exploit and promote creative and innovative approaches and initiatives in different domains of human activity and at all levels. While education and culture will be at the centre of the Year, it feeds into many other policy areas, such as enterprise, information society, employment or regional policy.

Creativity and creative industries play an important role in stimulating innovation capacities across Europe. This is increasingly recognised by governments and the public sector at EU, national and local levels. One of the objectives of the European Interest Group on Creativity and Innovation will be to raise awareness of the importance of local and regional agencies in supporting creative and innovative companies and institutions. They are closest to the creative people ans SMEs that are at the heart of Europe's innovation process and know their real needs and opportunities.

Recent Research on the Link between Creative Industries and Innovation

A number of research projects examining the role of creative industries as well as their links to the innovation potential of other sectors has recently been commissioned, illustrating that governments and public institutions across Europe are increasingly aware of the role that creativity plays in fostering economic growth. Consider for example, the following:

a) The European Commission has recently commissioned a study to examine the role of the arts and the creative industries in stimulating creativity, innovation and ubsequently economic growth. More specifically, the objectives are:

- To better grasp the notion of creativity as well as the various factors that can stimulate and unzip it

- More particularly, to have a better understanding of the effective and concrete contribution of culture to creativity,

- to better understand ways to measure the links between these various factors and creativity.

Results are expected towards the beginning of 2009. More information can be found here: http://ec.europa.eu/culture/key-documents/doc537_en.htm

b) NESTA, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts in the UK, is at the forefront of examining the relationship between the arts, creative industries and technological innovation. It recently published "Creating Innovation", one of the only research reports which statistically proves that close ties with creative businesses stimulate innovation capacities of businesses in other industries. You can download the report here: http://www.nesta.org.uk/creating-innovation/

b) Finally, a newly announced seminar from NESTA on July 14th in Manchester will also mark the launch of a new report on "Hidden Innovation in the Creative Industries". It will examine innovation behaviour in four CI sectors: video games development, product design, independent broadcasting and advertising. Click here to register: http://hiddeninnovationcreativeindustries.eventbrite.com/

We will keep you up to date on more news concerning the links between creativity and innovation.
